UPI, COD or both? Payment options that actually convert in India
Payment choice is not a technical decision, it is a trust decision. Here is how the options actually behave for Indian stores, including what cash on delivery really costs you.
Most Indian store owners get this backwards. They pick a gateway on fees, then wonder why conversion is poor. The better question is which methods your customers already trust, because a customer who cannot pay the way they want simply leaves.
UPI is not optional
UPI has become the default way a great many people pay online in India. It is fast, it is free or near-free for the customer, and it feels safer than typing card details. If your checkout does not offer it, you are asking a large share of visitors to pay in a way they would rather not. This is usually the single highest-return change available to an Indian store.
Cash on delivery: the honest maths
COD converts hesitant first-time buyers who will not prepay a brand they have never heard of. That is real and valuable. But it carries costs people underestimate: return-to-origin shipments where the customer refuses delivery, cash handling fees, delayed settlement, and higher casual ordering because there is no commitment at checkout.
The mistake is treating it as all-or-nothing. Most stores are better served by offering COD while actively steering customers towards prepaid.
How to reduce COD without losing the sale
A small prepaid discount is the most effective lever — even a modest percentage moves a meaningful share of orders. Adding a COD handling fee works too, and is more honest than it sounds since you genuinely incur that cost. Beyond price, verifying the phone number with an OTP before confirming a COD order filters out the least serious buyers, and restricting COD on high-value items or on pin codes with poor delivery history protects your worst-performing segment.
Cards, wallets and net banking
Still worth having, but rarely the deciding factor any more. Enable them, do not obsess over them. The exception is if you sell B2B or high-value items, where cards and net banking carry more weight.
What to show, and where
Put the payment logos on the product page and in the cart, not only at checkout. A customer deciding whether to add to cart is already asking whether they can pay comfortably. Answering that early removes a reason to hesitate.
The short version
Offer UPI first and prominently. Offer COD if your category needs it, but price it so prepaid is the more attractive choice. Show the options early. Then watch your RTO rate as closely as you watch conversion, because a sale that comes back is not a sale.
