Local SEO for Punjab businesses: the 10-point checklist
Most local SEO advice is written for American businesses. This is the version that actually applies if you are selling in Jalandhar, Ludhiana or Amritsar — in the order we would do it.
Local SEO is not one thing. It is roughly three: your Google Business Profile, your website, and what other sites say about you. Google weighs the first far more heavily than most business owners expect, which is why a competitor with a worse website often outranks you.
1. Claim and finish your Google Business Profile
This is the single biggest factor for near-me results, and it is free. Claim it, verify it, then actually finish it — most profiles are half empty. Category is the most important field: pick the most specific one that fits, not the broadest.
2. Get the category exactly right
A “Dental clinic” and a “Dentist” are different categories and rank for different searches. Look at what the top three competitors in your city use, then choose the one that genuinely matches what you do. Add secondary categories only where they are true.
3. Make NAP identical everywhere
Name, Address, Phone. These must match character for character across your website, Google profile, JustDial, IndiaMART, Facebook and any directory you are listed on. “Shop No. 5” on one and “Shop 5” on another is enough inconsistency to weaken the signal. Pick one format and enforce it.
4. Ask for reviews properly, and reply to all of them
Review count and recency both matter. A steady trickle beats twenty reviews in one week, which looks bought. What works in practice: ask in person at the moment the customer is happiest, then send the direct review link on WhatsApp within the hour. Reply to every review, including bad ones — a calm, specific reply to a complaint reads better to future customers than no reply at all.
5. Put your city in the places that count
Your homepage title, your H1, your meta description, and naturally through your body copy. Not stuffed — once each in the important places is plenty. “Web design company in Jalandhar” beats “Best web design company Jalandhar Punjab India” every time, because the second reads like spam to both Google and a human.
6. Build a real page for each city you serve
If you serve three cities, three pages — but only if you can write genuinely different content for each. The same text with the city name swapped is a doorway page, and Google is good at spotting it. Write about what is actually different: the industries there, the questions clients in that city ask, how you serve them.
7. Add LocalBusiness schema
Structured data telling Google your address, coordinates, opening hours, phone and service area. It will not rank you on its own, but it removes ambiguity and helps you qualify for rich results. Test it in the Google Rich Results Test before assuming it works.
8. Fix your mobile speed
Most local searches in Punjab happen on a phone, often on a patchy connection. If your site takes six seconds, a good share of people leave before seeing it. Compress your images, stop loading fonts and scripts you do not use, and test on an actual mid-range Android phone rather than your laptop.
9. Get listed where your customers already look
JustDial and IndiaMART still drive real enquiries in Punjab, especially in B2B. Local trade association directories carry weight too. You do not need a hundred listings — you need the handful your customers actually use, filled in properly and kept consistent.
10. Publish something useful, occasionally
You do not need a post every week. A few genuinely helpful pages answering the questions customers ask before buying will outperform a stream of thin filler. Write down the answers you already give on the phone ten times a week.
The honest summary
If you only do three of these, do the Google Business Profile, the reviews, and the mobile speed. Those three account for most of the movement we see in local rankings. The rest compounds on top.
